Say hello to guest blogger Candice Dow! The award-winning author of eight novels (including most recently, ahem, The Ex-Wife), Candice wed Sean Banks at The Belvedere on July 3, 2015. Here, she shares the story of how they got to “I do.”
How we met
On January 1, 2007, I posted on my vision board that I would meet the man who would be my husband. Thirty days later I met Sean at a party. As we danced, we realized that we were in seventh grade together. There were no instant sparks for me, and honestly I was just being friendly when I gave him my number. Later that week, he called as I was about to do a book signing in Bowie, MD. He said, “You won’t believe it, but I’m around the corner.” He showed up at the bookstore! To this day, he swears it was a coincidence, but I’m convinced he knew I was there.
My first impression
I thought he was nice—the guy you want to keep as a friend. We’d talk for hours about everything. Not only was he intelligent, he really got me! That was intoxicating and, finally, after a few months, I thought: Why am I keeping this man in the friend zone? And we made it official!
The moment I knew he was the one
We’d only been dating for about six months when I had to take care of my one-year-old niece for a few months. Sean was so involved—he helped me find daycare, and decorate and child-proof her room. Not only was he a great partner, but I knew he’d also be an awesome father. I wanted that for my future children!
How Sean proposed
We had been together for seven years—we have two children together, 6-year-old Ali and 2-year-old Zoe—and we’d always agreed that marriage wasn’t necessary. We believed in the philosophy that we were together solely because we wanted to be and not because we had to be. As I was about to turn 40, though, I began to feel differently and, ironically, so had he. I shared it with him, but he didn’t share his change of heart with me. At my 40th birthday party, amongst a bunch of friends, Sean proposed using an iPhone 6 box as the decoy. The irony of the iPhone box was that early in our relationship, at the same restaurant on my 33rd birthday, he’d bought me an iPhone and when he pulled it from his pocket all of my friends gasped and screamed because they thought it was an engagement ring. This time, it really was!
The highs and lows of our engagement period
Finding the Belvedere was the all-time high, because it was gorgeous and we were able to have what we wanted within our budget. The all-time low was managing the guest list and Sean’s expectations.
The biggest surprise (for better, for worse…) of our wedding day
The only thing I knew about Sean’s suit for the wedding was that he designed it and it was ivory. When I saw him, I was lost for words. My King. My Husband. My Friend.
Life as a married couple is…
Better than I imagined! Because we were partners for so long, I never thought things would change. But it has made our bond even stronger.
